I think both ways are valid, this way is better for maintaining strength across the whole hand, but the first method is better for individual finger strength - primarily when doing legato. If you’re hammering on every note, having one finger in contact at a time gives you much stronger attack. But yeah for many types of playing (and chording) this is the way to go.
