@melizcooks: If you didn’t know, I used to be a secondary school music teacher, and all that’s missing from the reel is a set of PowerPoint slides, a few musical examples and a lesson plan 🫠 Quite simply, I get asked ALL the time about the ingredients I use, and why I speak the way / say the words I do, and that’s because although I have grown up speaking English as my main language, the Turkish Cypriot dialect is my mother tongue. When I converse with my mum, we speak mostly the latter, and I regularly refer to the traditional ingredients I use when cooking by using the Turkish / Turkish Cypriot words. My husband always asks me why I sound like I’m arguing whenever I’m on the phone to her - it’s just the way it sounds when we speak, but it’s BEAUTIFUL🤣 I never want to lose it! Here I’ve given you a list of some of my most used ingredients, using the English / Turkish / Turkish Cypriot (sometimes these are shared words with our Greek Cypriot neighbours too, such as “golyandro”🌿), so you can recognise them a little more when I’m using them in my videos and recipes. 1. Sweet red pepper paste / tatlı (“dadlı”) biber salçası 2. Pomegranate molasses / nar ekşisi 3. Aleppo pepper/ Turkish red pepper flakes / Pul biber 4. Dried mint / kuru (“guru”) nane 5. Lemon / limon / ekşi 6. Pasta / makarna / Magarına 7. Sesame seed paste / tahini / tahina / tahin 8. Coriander / cilantro / kişniş / golyandro 9. Nigella seeds / black onion seeds / çörek otu / garacocco 10. Halloumi / hellim #ingredients #food #language #dialect

I’ve never ate a Turkish dish with cilantro and I don’t think dried mint either.

As a Palestinian I would say same to all of these except red pepper paste (though I LOVE it) and coriander! We use predominantly parsley instead.

Wow your mainland accent also sounds great! I honestly learned all about Cypriot accent from you cause I don’t live in Turkey or Cyprus. You’re teaching us more than just Turkish Cypriot cooking!

Love how you spoke in Mainland Turkish dialect/words, then in Turkish Cypriot/ kibrisca, in case the mainlanders don’t understand our kibrisca way of referring to things ♥️♥️
