🖤 Yesterday, a fellow mermaid made a controversial post explaining all the reasons why you should not cosplay sirens. She stated that sirens are demonic, soul-sucking creatures that use their voice for possession and to destroy all life around them. And to cosplay them is to align yourself with an evil & malevolent spirit. Instead, she believes you should only cosplay mermaids - which embody the light. 👀 While I don’t typically engage with preachy & dogmatic posts like these, I did feel called to voice a response as someone who not only cosplays sirens, but also heavily identifies with the story of the siren. 🙈 And although I felt my comments were quite open-minded and heartfelt, they were promptly deleted along with the comments of many other mers who voiced an opinion to the contrary of hers. ⚖️ So, in the spirit of free debate and non-judgment, I would love to reopen the topic and hear what you all think about this subject. 🤣 🎨 Personally, I believe there is beauty in all representations of cosplay & art (light, dark, and everything in between). It is one of the reasons I love the mermaid community so much, because it is a safe place to explore my weirdness. 🧜🏻‍♀️ In my eyes, mermaids and sirens represent the beautiful duality of light and dark that exists within all of us. ✨ 🐚 I believe the mermaid is the embodiment of the light feminine. She is everything that society has praised women for being throughout history - beautiful, graceful, elegant, sweet, and lovely. 💀 The siren represents the other side of the coin. She is the tortured dark feminine, trying to take back her power in a cruel patriarch’s world. She is cunning, wild, messy, and unhinged. She represents all women across history who have been forced to silence their voices and live in a dark ocean of despair. Her rage is her song, and men across the world fear it. 🙌 As a woman, I connect deeply to both these energies and find healing in creating art that allows an outlet for these emotions. And if there is one thing I have learned on my own journey, it is that there is no light without darkness. 💫 💎 What do you think?? Let me know in the comments. 💜
