In NB Canada when we get LVL's (Trusses + Floor joists + LVL's) they come with a plan and the suggested way of install is to nail 4 spikes every 1 foot. So 3 sandwiched together for a load bear beam.

The LVL has printing on it for a reason, shows grade/design capacity, date of manufacture etc. should always be showing on the inside..

always shoot your nails at an angle when you're making your header board. you wanted to have to be destroyed to come apart.
