Replenishing my stocks of medium bowls, thrown with 453 grams to about 18 cm wide by 7.5 tall. Soft clay helps me make these quickly, although I need to be swift as the overhanging walls like to slump if the stoneware is overworked a little too much. Generally speaking, if walls are thrown upright and then stretched out whilst they’ll overhang better, but throwing walls like that can be slower, so for these I typically pull them right out to the pointer’s gauge. I leave plenty of clay in the base of these, firstly, so I can turn a tall, elegant foot from it, and secondly, so there’s enough material to allow me to jab my fingers into the bottom to pry it off the wheel from. There’s nothing wrong with throwing bowls on batts, but I have issues sometimes with storage in my studio and the more I can fit on a ware board the better. Plus, not having to attach a new batt each time saves a few precious seconds. Much of my job these days is away from the wheel, (admin, making content for my social media, book related events, and so on), so the more time I can spend actually throwing the better.
