I would say I’d like to see a completely new story with new characters in a future Red Dead game, if it wasn’t for the absolute gold mine of a character, like lighting in a bottle, Dutch Van der Linde. When it comes to any good story I’d imagine you’d have to ask yourself “Is there a new story worth telling?” and when it comes to Dutch I absolutely think so. It’s true we know a lot about him from both games, but he’s such a polarizing character. There’s so much duality and depth to his character that Benjamin Byron Davis portrays beautifully. He’s easily one of the best characters if not THE best character of the series in my opinion. He had one of the best final monologues in the limited amount of screen time he has in RDR1 combined with the great amount of effort put into his character in RDR2 when they absolutely did not have to but they truly went the extra mile. It’s so interesting how someone can interpret Dutch’s actions with either the least or the most amount of credit. At best, he felt as though he carried the world upon his shoulders and was a man who truly believed in his philosophy of living. Someone who did genuinely care about people to a degree and tried to honor a code, but ultimately succumbed to the pressures of the encroaching civilization and authority around him. At worst, he was nothing more than a narcissist who only ever served himself and therefore only ever cared for the people who could serve and support his way of life. I believe there’s truth in both perspectives but it’s up to you ultimately. It’s important to note that almost every character in the game has a different idea of who Dutch was as a person. John says to Ross and Fordham that Dutch was a great man once and that it was people like them who made Dutch into the person he became in RDR1. Sadie says to Arthur that Dutch at the end of RDR2 was not the same Dutch who saved her and put a warm blanket over her and took her in at Colter. Arthur says to John that maybe Dutch was always a bad man and they just couldn’t see it but even Arthur, who next to Hosea was the closest person to Dutch, still isn’t sure who Dutch is. The only person who can accurately tell Dutch’s story is Dutch himself. The big question I have that I believe would warrant his story being told from his perspective, is how does a man become someone like Dutch Van der Linde? He’s morally very complicated. He’s no Micah. But he’s also not Arthur or John clearly. Dutch actually shares the most in common, I believe, with Jack Marston. Both characters were orphaned at a young age. Their fathers were killed by a corrupt government while their mothers died later on with a lot of grief to bear no doubt. Both men share a great interest in reading whether it be history or idealized myths. They both share a great resentment towards authority on a deeply personal level and feel as though they have something to prove. Continuing the story of Red Dead, I have to wonder what kind of a man would Jack turn into? A Marston or a Morgan? Or more of a Van der Linde? And what does that really mean? Who is Dutch Van der Linde? There’s so many questions I have. I don’t know if it makes sense but weirdly enough I think a Dutch led RDR3 could serve as both another prequel and as a possible continuation of RDR when it comes to the philosophy of the western outlaw, and what that means for our young Jack Marston. I think Dutch is the best written and by far the most complicated character of RDR and there’s so much potential in that story to show new depth to a character that has been built up so much from his first appearance in 2010’s Red Dead Redemption. I’ve gone on so many long rants about RDR3 I could go on and on so if you’ve gotten this far in reading what I have to say, thank you for listening. Let me know what you think. I'd love to talk about this. #rdr2 #dutchvanderlinde #arthurmorgan #reddeadredemption #edit #reddeadtok #CapCut
