Failure is Inevitable, It’s What You do Next That Matters There are so many people who are so terrified of failure, it keeps them stuck. I get it, I’ve been one of them. And in some areas of my life it is still a struggle. But with lifting & academics I did learn how to be more resilient through failure. But it took learning the hard way. In my PhD I was on the cusp of being kicked out of my graduate program about 2 years into my PhD. While I was doing well in the classroom, my research was lackluster to put it mildly. I had tried several experiments that generated no usable data. 2 years in I had nothing to show for it. So I got really sad, mopey, felt sorry for myself, & stopped putting the work in. Until one day my PhD advisor called me in & told me that I was on the verge of being put on probation from the program. I had nothing to really say in my defense. He was disappointed in me & I was disappointed in myself I decided to go all in. Maybe none of it would work out. Maybe I’d put all the work in & would have nothing to show for it. But I wanted to know that I gave it my all & if it didn’t work out, then at least I’d know I did everything I could. But trying to achieve something that seems so far out of reach is intimidating to say the least. What worked for me was breaking it up into small pieces. One experiment at a time, one research paper at a time, one lab assay at a time, one eppendorf tube at a time. So each day I wrote down 3 things I needed to get done that day on a wipeoff board. Each day I did those 3 things whether it took 2 hours or 20 hours in lab. Slowly over time, things started clicking. But often when we first start changing things, it can be very discouraging because we don’t see immediate results. So we fall back into our bad patterns because if we are changing things & uncomfortable doing something uncomfortable but not seeing the results, it’s hard for us to keep staying uncomfortable. That is where commitment & discipline comes in. Continuing to do the things you know you need to do in order to achieve what you want
