Man vs. Bear, the Reality The internet has given us many wonderful debates: man vs. bear, what color is this dress, and why is it OK for a hot female teacher to sleep with a teenage boy, when it’s wrong for a male teacher to do the same with a teenage girl? (That last one is always odd. If you don’t see the difference between the two, you need serious help. Weirdo.) What we are tackling here is the “What would a woman rather encounter in the woods: a strange man, or a bear?” Reality dictates it would be a man, but, the internet is full of silly (and stupid) people. Before the advent of social media, being a conspiracy theorist, flat-earthed, anti-vaxxer, or QAnon member would have been considered shameful. Today? Nope! The worst of the worst kind of people are able to find like-minded miscreants to surround themselves with, and find a home away from reality where they can thrive. Anyway, one of the most recent debates was: would a woman rather stumble across a strange man, or a bear, in the woods? People went into hysterics over this one, thinking for some reason a strange man would be the worst thing ever. Um... Don't most cases of violence between people happen between known entities? Look at Gabby Petito. She wasn’t taken out by a rando hiker she stumbled across, her fiancé, Brian Laundrie was the evil that ended her. Consider the charming relationship Lorena and John Wayne Bobbitt had. They didn’t make the news because she cut off the willie of a complete stranger who had abused her. No, the calls are usually coming from within the house. Yes, we all live in fear of the outside world, and we see horrible videos on social media (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube) every day of bad things happening to innocent people, but that isn’t reality. Nothing online is real. We know that models use filters and photoshop to look better. We know that influencers (those followed by the dumbest of the dumb) take pictures in fake airplanes and rented cars to appear wealthier than they are. So why would we believe random violence is more prevalent than it is, when our own eyes tell us otherwise whenever we ourselves are outside? Which isn’t to say women don’t have to be vigilant; I acknowledge as much in this reel. But I bet there’s a greater chance of a woman being slipped a mickey at a bar than there is of them stumbling across a sociopath while out in nature. #socialmedia #fear #debate #news
