Replying to @Sue Freeman Amlodipine Side Effects Explained: Swollen Ankles, Oedema, Headaches, Flushing, Dizziness, Palpitations and Grapefruit Interaction If you take amlodipine for high blood pressure and your ankles have become noticeably swollen, your medicine could be contributing. Swelling of the ankles, feet and legs — called oedema — is a well-recognised side effect of amlodipine. It is one of the most common reasons patients ask me whether something has changed with their circulation. 💊 Why does amlodipine cause swollen ankles? Amlodipine is a calcium-channel blocker. It relaxes and widens arteries, helping lower blood pressure. But that widening of small blood vessels can also increase pressure in tiny vessels around the ankles, allowing fluid to move into surrounding tissues. So amlodipine ankle swelling is not necessarily the same as simply having “too much water” in your body. That distinction matters. Other recognised amlodipine side effects include: • headache • dizziness • flushing • tiredness • palpitations — feeling your heartbeat more noticeably • ankle swelling Official UK prescribing information lists headache, dizziness, palpitations, flushing and ankle swelling among commonly reported effects. 🦷 And here is one side effect far fewer people know about. Amlodipine has also been associated with gingival hyperplasia — overgrowth or thickening of the gums. It is listed as a very rare adverse effect in UK product information. 🍊 What about grapefruit? Current NHS guidance advises people taking amlodipine not to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice, because it can increase the chance of side effects. 🍷 Alcohol can also increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect and make dizziness or low blood pressure more likely, so NHS advice is to limit how much you drink. Amlodipine can normally be taken with or without food, and taking it at roughly the same time each day can make it easier to remember. ⚠️ Don’t stop amlodipine suddenly because your ankles have swollen. The NHS specifically advises not to stop unless your doctor tells you to, because stopping can allow your blood pressure to rise and may be dangerous. Instead, speak to your pharmacist or prescriber. They can look at: • how severe the swelling is • whether amlodipine is actually responsible • your dose • your blood pressure • other medicines you take • whether another treatment would be more appropriate And remember: new swelling is not automatically caused by amlodipine. Heart, kidney, liver and circulation problems can also cause swollen legs, so significant, sudden or unusual swelling deserves proper assessment. People often search: Can amlodipine cause swollen ankles? Why does amlodipine cause ankle swelling? Does amlodipine cause water retention? Will amlodipine ankle swelling go away? Can amlodipine cause dizziness or palpitations? Can amlodipine affect your gums? Can you drink grapefruit juice with amlodipine? Can I stop amlodipine because my ankles are swollen? A medicine can be protecting your blood pressure and still cause a side effect worth reviewing. Both things can be true. Save this if you take amlodipine, share it with someone complaining about swollen ankles, and follow for straight-talking explanations about the medicines you take. 💚 #Amlodipine #heartattack #swollenankles #hypertension #highbloodpressure
