I remember as a child when the color green was a novelty for Legos!

pluss when I was small I could get boxes of random blocks to build whatever I could imagine. now you have to buy sets and can only use it to build that specific thing.

This is a bit of a myth. Inflation, children not understanding price, and sets feeling more complex when you're younger drive this perception. Lego has *always* been expensive

"When I was 10, the most expensive set was Hogwarts" Sir, you don't need to make me feel so old, you have hurt my feelings.

We never had Lego sets growing up. Just the tub of miscellaneous bricks 🤣

it's really dependent on what you're buying. kid sets still go for 30-50 (or under, depending on size), while the big sets (like the Falcon) are 200. Then you have the adult sets.

Not a parent but loving kinda aunt to many kids: WHY CAN'T I FIND NORMAL LEGO??
All I want is a big set of primary colour bricks for imaginative play but 99% of lego is models for specific things. 😭

Lego didn't gentrify, you're comparing your memory of children's sets to the sets they make for their adult fans now. Kids sets still range anywhere from $20 - $50

Scalpers and inflation. If people are buying sets for $500 second hand, then why wouldn't they be the ones to get that money

In simple, newer and more refined building techniques allows for finer detailed and slicker models... the catch is 4-5x more pieces in the model and a 3-6x pricetag.

Some people made a job out of buying limited edition lego sets, holding them for a year and selling them the next for thousands.

so there is a video talking about Lego value. tldr the bricks per box is the same just there is more bricks used now than before because the builds are more complex

Second hand trading in discontinued Star Wars Lego sets is officially more profitable than gold, it’s crazy.

Lego has had to constantly change and re-imagine what their sets are going to be in order to remain relevant. We assume they're always successful but they have had some very trying times.

When I was young, I remember asking mom to buy *one* set, (we had others but I forget her buying them). It was Anakin's Jedi Starfighter.

Oh! You’re talking about the resale market which is always weird and unpredictable but the most expensive retail price is about $731 USD but there are sets at all price ranges with the average price

unopened lego sets have out paced gold for the last 15 years as an investment.
also most lego prices are set per brick, but licensing fees cause inflated prices.
mickey Legos are like 3 times more

the most expensive sets I've seen at the store were around $500, and that's for things like the extra big millennium falcon or the Disney castle.

you're much younger than me. I was well into my teens adult when they started doing the specific sets. it was fast better when it was a box of blocks to do what you want with

I haven't bought Lego since I was a kid because I can't afford the price for Lego. If Lego was cheaper, I'd buy it. Eventually Lego will realize they've priced themselves out of (1/2)

I worked at Toys R Us and I had one regular who came in every Saturday morning around 10-11 am with his son, who was probably 8-10 years old, and they would pick out a Lego set for the week. This was weekly for over 2 years. I think the only times he didn’t come in were a couple Saturdays in December because he’d get them for Christmas instead. I’m honestly shocked that Lego was coming out with new ones fast enough to keep up with this dad’s purchases.
