La Fiesta de Santiago Apostol, or the Festival of Saint James the Apostle, is a week-long celebration in Loíza, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 that honors the feast day of Saint James. The festival includes a religious ceremony, carnival, parades, music, dance, and food. Carnival: The festival includes a lively carnival with parades where vejigantes (evil) and Spanish knights (Caballeros) battle to represent the struggle between good and evil. Music: The festival features traditional bomba music, a folk music with African influences, and newer music. Dancers use their colorful skirts to interact with the drummers. Costumes: Townspeople dress as one of four historic characters: the Caballero, the Vejigante, El Viejo (men dressed as old men), and La Loca (men dressed as crazy ladies). The festival takes place around July 25th, the feast day of Saint James. The devotion to Santiago came to Puerto Rico with the Spanish conquistadors, but in Loíza, the tradition was preserved due to isolation from other towns. The Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (English: Institute of Puerto Rican Culture), or ICP for short, is an institution of the Government of Puerto Rico responsible for the establishment of the cultural policies required in order to study, preserve, promote, enrich, and diffuse the cultural values of Puerto Rico.
