If they can't hear cues during toy play how could they hear you when they're on the suit? If they can't play with you in the presence of other people then do you think they'll be able to take toy rewards on the field around a decoy? There's more than enough technique to be built outside of any specific exercise pictures to keep you busy for a LONG time. There's no need to work on your obedience, grip, out, guard, and recall all in one session because you want to train a specific exercise. Take those pieces out, work on them individually and then bring them back together when you have clarity. Building toy play skills lets me - - Gauge my dogs arousal mobility - Create a functional reward system to use in the presence of competing reinforcers - Build behaviors at home at my dog and l's pace I don't bring any skills to the decoy that I haven't built to fluency with my toys first. That lets me maintain my suit criteria without adding in any confusion of behavior development.
