@philosophyminis: Anti-natalism is the idea that it's wrong to have kids. It argues that anybody who chooses to have biological children is immoral. One of the first and often most cited proponents of this is the philosopher, David Benatar. Benatar argues that we each give an ‘unreliable assessment’ of how good our lives actually are. We say things are great, but actually life is always worse than we let on. Humans tend to be optimistic. We tend to focus on the rare and fleeting moments of happiness that pop up in the long night of misery that makes up reality. We shrug our shoulders and say, ‘Oh, it's not so bad,’ but it really is. The only reason we delude ourselves like this is to carry on the species. Because everybody admitted how miserable life actually was, we wouldn't bother to reproduce. Evolution demands that we be optimistic. Evolution demands that we pretend life is great. But Benatar argues that we are rational beings, and we can look on the world as it actually is: a world full of harm and set only to get worse. And so, bringing children into this will increase net suffering. This all leads Benatar to conclude that having kids is wrong. And he explains it this way: ‘Each of us was harmed by being brought into existence, because the quality of even the best lives is very bad and worse than most people recognize it to be. But it is not too late to prevent the existence of future possible people.’ So is Benatar, right? Is it a duty not to have kids?

I have always said this, there is no purely logical reason to have children !
The reasons are either selfish or emotional but never really logical.

I agree with this. No amount of good a potential life has outweighs the net-zero suffering of not existing at all.

It'd be interested in having counter arguments of this point of view, because even tho it sounds really pessimistic, I pretty much fully agree on this

Is it bad I agree with this to some extent? Life is only at its best if you’re not grown into poverty or a toxic environment

I completely agree, I don’t criticise the friends or family who decided to have them, but I can’t fathom such a level of self entitlement

I see it this way: if you're born, you are guaranteed to suffer in some way or another, despite how happy your life is. If you're never born, you're never happy but you also never suffer. 1/2

I personally agree with this and don't want kids. However, it's nice to see when someone wants who a kid and clearly loves them and raises them right. I can't judge someone's choice

Just because David Benatar’s life sucks, doesn’t mean everyone else’s is the same.

When people are alive they do everything they can to keep on living because they know the value of their life so well. Life is so precious and perfect as opposed to never existing.

if youre gonna bring children into this ill driven capitalistic society to be raised as workers for the rich, to fight for the corrupted, and to deal with the entitled; then is it really worth it for-

Surely if he’s correct then there’s no rational point in any of us already-alive people being alive? Does that seem like an intuitive moral philosophy?

I would argue that the amount of suffering is decreasing with the general improvement of living conditions. Also by having kids one is helping humanity further decrease the amount of suffering

As a young man during the mid eighties I really thought long and hard about this question. What a wonderful thing to have the joys of having a son and daughter. However, today, we'll into my sixties, with grandchildren, the question returned and really haunts me. The world is upside down.
