How do we encourage resilience in our kids? The answer has something to do with a light switch. Stay with me here - you know by now that I love metaphors, and this is a really good one because it drives home the difference between a focus on happiness vs a focus on resilience. When your child gets upset, imagine that her emotional distress “light” suddenly gets turned on and is very bright. As parents, we have two options: we can try to turn our child’s distress OFF so no one sees or feels the distress... or we can DIM the light, meaning we can make it less blindingly bright and, therefore, more manageable. When we dim our children’s distress, we let them know: “It’s ok to feel upset. Feeling distress is tough but manageable. You’ll start to feel a bit better when you have someone supportive in your corner. And then you’ll feel strong and capable.” This is RESILIENCE. When we try to take our children’s distress away or replace it with happiness, we are telling our kids: “When you get upset in life, run away! Find something to take your distress away immediately because those uncomfortable feelings inside of you are dangerous. People won’t be there for you in tough times. Do whatever you can to get rid of your distress.” Interestingly, the majority of unhealthy coping mechanisms in adults come from the hope to turn off distress completely, rather than moderate it. Let’s turn this idea into action. The next time your child gets upset, share these words: “Ugh, so frustrating! I know. I’m right here with you.” Remind yourself that your child will still feel frustrated! The goal isn’t to make it go away - your child is slowly absorbing your distress tolerance, which is what builds their distress tolerance. If you want more on this, click the link in my bio to learn how you can set your child up for a future of confidence and resilience. I say with so much conviction, this will be a game-changer.
