wrong. if plan allows hardship, no 10% penalty,has to be 1 of 6. while law changed & may not require proof of hardship, if it's audits you,you better have proof. i work in 401k industry, TPA.

open a Roth IRA, you can do a lot of withdrawals penalty free from there. Have it alongside your 401K and invest in it as well. Principal can be withdrawn at any time

Definitely check your plan. My company’s plan allows for withdrawals at age 55 with no penalty.
