Before hatching, the chick positions itself so that the beak is close to the inner tube, towards the large end of the egg. This pocket contains the oxygen the chick needs to breathe during hatching. The chick uses the "diamond" on the top of its beak to pierce the inner tube membrane and then the shell. This structure then disappears. After piercing the inner tube, the chick needs several hours to recover. If the chick is in an incubator, do not open the lid, as this could cause the membrane surrounding the chick to dry out and trap it in its shell. When the chick starts to pierce the shell, it breathes in fresh air and little by little, it will cut a hole big enough to get out.

After hatching, the chick needs to dry out and rest for at least 24 hours, either under its mother's feathers or in an incubator heated to around 35°C. Then, twice a day, feed them a special complete feed for chicks, in a feeder adapted to their size. Don't forget to provide clean water every day, in a trough at the chick's height ☺️

During hatching, the chick makes sounds to communicate with the hen. When brooding is natural, the hen needs to know that the chick is about to emerge and get up regularly to allow oxygen to circulate through the shell. Oral communication also serves to synchronise the hatching of eggs that were incubated together.
