Where we live, some people celebrate it as the day Australia was ‘discovered’ by the first fleet in 1788 and they call it Australia Day. But it’s based on a lie. Australia was not ‘discovered’ on that date. It was invaded by colonial settlers who began the centuries-long occupation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land, as well as the genocide of First Nations peoples and the attempted destruction of their over 200 individual languages and cultures. Why is this important to Rainbow History Class? First up, our community is about solidarity. We stand in support of all Aboriginal and First Nations peoples in the struggle against oppression and colonisation. The other reason this is so important? When Australia was invaded, settlers enforced their Christian Eurpoean ideas of gender and sexuality onto Indigenous people, as well as brought in Birtish anti-homosexuality laws. Then, by disrupting lines of cultural transmission, so much pre-colonial history was destroyed. LGBTQ+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities are emerging and forging their own history, to make up for what was stolen. Tomorrow is not a date to celebrate. If you’re not Indigenous, it is a date to learn and reflect on the ways in which the colonisation of Australia is still ongoing.
