A lot of times parents are so mad at the actions that they think they need to punish the kid instead of discipline.

This! It’s even more important when they’re teenagers. And if you start when they’re younger it’s very likely the solid relationship you’ve built over the years will result in mutual respect.

I love this. Yelling and shaming doesn’t do anything but hurt.

This!!! My kids dumped their yogurt melts on the carpet and smushed them in and I said "okay y'all look bored, here's the vacuum you and your sister can clean this up" lol they loved it 😂

And I think adults need to remember that the lil kid frustration of having to clean something up is so valid! I’m an adult and when I spill something I get REALLY mad that I have to stop and—

No for real this is perfect because as a millennial the way I just wanted the consequence and NOT my mom assuming my motives behind it and giving me a lecture about her assumptions, which were wrong😒

This can also be combined with researching why we don't leave crumbs in the car - so that the responsibility is there & also the reason why it's important

When our daughter was about 8 I explained (and many times after) that we needed to take care of our car because one day it would be hers. OMG the care she took with her backseat antics after that.

it's the ego that drives us to be jerks. we react to the "I'm not going to vacuum!" with a feeling of our ego being attacked, mad that they're not complying/respecting/fawning at our anger

I totally agree but what do you do if they just actually totally flat out refuse to vacuum the car
