We got a Queen Amidala costume for $10 at a thrift shop but all of the headdresses were garbage and I had the idea that we could just make one. I started the first attempt at the hair shape by crimping foil, then covered that in batting, and wrapped with synthetic hair from Sally Beauty supply ($3.50 a bag so I got 3 bags just in case). Ear covers sculpted from foam and covered in gold tablecloth. The first attempt did not work because it didn't leave room for the ear covers and extra pieces & hair needed to be oval-shaped so I started over. Went to the dollar store and got a wire wreath and foam wreaths broken into pieces bent and duct taped to the right shape. Wrapped the new oval with batting and socks from the dollar store, then synthetic hair...again. (Don't bother with anything but hot glue it won't work) Very gently used a heat gun (Walmart $25) to smooth out the hair. (Careful not to melt it like I did more on the first attempt.) I cut rough patterns for the crown from paper and traced to EVA foam from Michaels. Heat gun from Walmart to flatten/shape EVA foam. Attached two black ribbons so that it will tie at the base of the head. Added two half spheres covered in foil as ear covers. Gold foil was sold out near us so I covered the entire crown in foil and spray painted it gold I already had. Spray adhesive with foam and foil don't work that well so I highly recommend sticking with hot glue-can't stress this enough) I found clearance red lace (folded for two layers every time I used it), rhinestone ribbon, gold thread at Jo-Ann fabrics as well as a cheap gold tablecloth at Walmart. Added rhinestone and lace detail with gold edging. Cut out rhinestone ribbon for the crown centerpiece and used a cereal box wrapped in cheap gold tablecloth then red lace and glued into place. I also attached black felt to cover the inside so it wasn't scratching up my kiddo! I used a heavy duty magnet (on crown) and large washer (on hair) to hold the hair onto the underside of the crown at the top of the back of the head then hot glued the side pieces into place. I wish I had made this onto a foam head that wasn't tilted and made the sides a little bit longer but it came out ok. I haven't added the forehead jewel (since what we had wasn't the right size) or top detail yet but I will. It rained a bit on Halloween and I was afraid the top point on the crown would get knocked off by the umbrella! She did a great job keeping it on and now I just have to learn more about makeup! Huge thanks to the makers whose videos helped so much! #alysontabbitha #kealyann
