The shepherd stands near, a dark shape against the glow of evening, his staff an unspoken promise. Somewhere beyond the pen, the wind carries the distant howl of something untamed, something with teeth, but the lamb does not yet know to fear the things that wait in the dark. He knows only the rough press of his mother’s flank, the steady drumming of her heart—a song that has played for generations, unbroken, unchanged. He will learn soon enough. The hills will teach him, the cold will carve its lessons into his bones, the shepherd’s voice will shape his world. But for now, he stands in the dying light, his breath soft as the mist rising from the valley, and wonders. What lies beyond the fence, beyond the flock, beyond the rhythm of hooves on soil? Is there more to the world than this golden moment, this unspoken belonging? Or is this, in its quiet, unshaken truth, everything?
