🥄 WHAT IS GUA SHA? Gua sha is a traditional Chinese healing technique, used for the last 3,000+ years that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool: spoon, stone, and metal. The practice involves applying pressure to the skin in long strokes with mild to firm pressure. 🔬 RESEARCH Gua sha originated in the countryside, which was considered folk medicine. In a 2007 gua sha research study (Nielsen et al) conducted in Germany, researchers utilized laser doppler imaging on 11 “healthy but stressed” subjects, including doctors and nurses who had ‘normal’ myalgia pain and evidence of ‘sha’ based on palpation. They established a baseline scan for each subject before gua sha, and then scanned each subject 10 times, once every 2.5 minutes following gua sha, and then performed a follow up scan 2 days later. What did they find? 🔍 They found a 400% increase in microperfusion (surface circulation of blood) for 7.5 minutes following gua sha, and a significant increase for the full 25 minutes following treatment that was studied. Scans returned to baseline at the 2-day point. Every subject experienced a decrease or complete resolution in pain and a better sense of well being.  Even though this small study was pioneered over 14 years ago, it began to open the gate for the validity of Chinese medicine. 📖 🇨🇳 💡HOW DOES IT WORK? In the ancient Chinese medicine text: gua sha increases qi and blood. Essentially, by creating friction on the skin will generate an increase in heat. This heat allows the qi (aka “oxygen”) and blood to move in areas of stagnation. Usually where it’s painful, chances are there is what we call ‘sha. 🥹 BENEFITS 🫰🏼decrease pain: neck stress, shoulder pain, back pain, headaches 🫰🏼improves stress, which can help with insomnia 🫰🏼regulates allergies 🫰🏼supports digestive health Comment below on your experience or with your questions ♥️ No medical advice, just healthy tips 🥰 Please advise with your medical doctor for kids and those who are expecting 👧🏻 🤰🏻 #guashamassage #guashatutorial #chronicpain #insomnia #bodyguasha #fascialrelease #painrelief #chinesemedicine
