Here’s what Meta’s new rules mean for LGBTQ+ people. On Tuesday 7 January, the company revealed its new moderation policies and practices. Under the section on Hateful Conduct, it now says: “We do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality and common non-serious usage of words such as “weird”. The new policies also allow content that advocates for “seggs or gender-based exclusion from spaces commonly limited by seggs or gender, such as restrooms, sports and… specific schools”. In other words, content that calls for the economic and social exclusion of transgender people. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a statement that the company will also be ending its fact-checking program, replacing it with a “community notes” style system similar to X. Earlier this week, tech journalist Taylor Lorenz revealed that Meta had been censoring content labelled with LGBTQ+ hashtags on Instagram for months. Hashtags including transwomen nonbiary and bisexualpride were hidden under the company’s “sensitive content” policy targeting “sexually suggestive content”. This filter was automatically turned on for minors. After Lorenz reached out for comment, Meta reversed the blocks, claiming the hashtags were “mistakenly restricted”. In response to the new moderation policies, GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said: “Without these necessary hate speech and other policies, Meta is giving the green light for people to target LGBTQ people, women, immigrants, and other marginalized groups with violence, vitriol, and dehumanizing narratives.” She added that Meta is “continuing to normalize anti-LGBTQ hatred for profit — at the expense of its users and true freedom of expression”. #meta #markzuckerberg #lgbtqia #transrights #donaldtrump
