Weekend beekeeping was done in the blue mountains, despite the really crappy start to the season the bees are bouncing back strongly, they are on a heavy pollen and nectar flow and the queens are laying in a good solid pattern. The queens here will be replaced later on in the season as they have laid so many eggs, the next season I doubt they will be as productive and it will lead into problems that’s probably best avoided with just replacing the queen. The main tasks were to ensure the bees were bringing in the nutrition they need to stay healthy and strong, along with also ensuring all the small hive beetle traps are ready. As we head into summer the beetles will become more prevalent in the hives so it’s important to start early with the traps. The next few weeks will be focused on organising some sites and getting equipment ready for raising new colonies. Some more new sites in Newcastle region were detected with varroa mite, we probably won’t know the full extent of the spread until around Autumn. The DPI is doing all it can, so it’s vital beekeepers play their part and ensure they are following the guidelines, end of the day it’s to protect the industry. If the outbreak is declared endemic, the cost to keep bees will skyrocket, in turn increasing food production costs for the crops that require pollination.
