I rewatched West Side Story 2021 after seeing Wicked and it was like night day, so much more visual storytelling in WSS and much better use of the camera/editing

They want us to be in the middle of the dance number but I just want an audience view

it’s a very rare skill to know how to film dance numbers - in the modern era really only Spielberg can do it (WSS) as well as Michael Gracey (Greatest Showman) thanks to his background in music videos. Also Damien Chazelle to SOME extent.

I love the integrity of old movie musicals because EVERYONE had talent. All of those folks came from Broadway or were professional dancers, so they could shoot huge dance numbers in 2 straight takes.

Not to mention constantly cutting away from the dancing to show something entirely unrelated on the periphery as I’ve seen in so many movie musicals with big numbers

Fred Astaire had a contract in every movie that his dance scenes would be head to toe.

I am a notorious background character watcher. I will watch the kids on the side of the stage watching the adults dance more than watching the adults dance. movie musicals never allow me my ideal watching scenario.

I said this about Dancing Through Life, I felt like it didn’t let you linger and enjoy the choreo enough.

Weirdly enough the wiz zooms out too much to the point you can barely make out the choreography

my dance sequence scene standard was set with the barn raising scene from seven brides for seven brothers. I'm still chasing that high.

it's also why those older musical movies are so beloved even today. it showed everything not just the stars. makes it feel more enduring and kinda like we our selves are watching it on stage.

also- my pet peeve is how they always slightly speed up the dance scenes to make the movements look sharper. it looks too fast and unnatural to me

See this is why I like both live theatre and movie musicals. I think it’s so great seeing the whole dance. But also I love zooming in on moments because you get to see dancers you

This is because the old musicals had a minimum of cuts and sometimes none for the dance scenes. It had to be perfect all the way through.

The editing in WICKED was exhausting and counter-productive. How did Chu get these jobs for musicals? IN THE HEIGHTS was unwatchable.

Sadly it’s probably because dancers of Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers or Gene Kelly’s caliber are a rarity these days. Even rarer to find an actor/dancer combo for the lead.

they need to do it like kpop where there's a version where the camera moves and cuts and then a second version where the camera is still and it's just one wide shot

a good movie musical should be able to do both, but yeah I think the primary shot should be the crowd view. Hamilton did it perfectly. intimate at times....

I say this every time a pro-shot of a stage show is done. Give me three shots. A high wide, a proscenium width, and the occasional iso shot. TV & movie directors shouldn’t direct these projects.
