@dragonflydownsfarm: Final acorn update! I’ve been scheming about stacking functions (hello permaculture principles!) and using the pond sprayer to passively cold-leach acorns. Acorns are an amazing food source—as calorie dense as corn, growing from native trees that serve as keystone species for wildlife, and full of good carbs, fats, and minerals—but fresh from the tree they carry too many tannins to be edible. They need to have the tannins removed through a process called leaching. Basically, soaking them in enough water for long enough that the tannins can’t be tasted anymore. This plan worked reasonably well, and I will go forward with my idea for a more serious set up. My biggest take aways were that I need to allocate probably a full week for leaching, and that I could cut that down by at least a couple days if I could get the meal ground more evenly. I need to a flour mill! #acorn #stackingfunctions #foraging #permaculture #perennialcrops #nativefoods #homesteadkitchen #homesteading #regenerativeagriculture
In Parable of the Sower they kept talking about acorn bread and I was so curious what that would look like. This gives me such a clearer idea! Also really crazy algorithm accuracy!
