Canex WKND 2024 – Interview with Imane Khelif, hosted by Konnie Touré (Part II) Konnie: “So Imane, you grew up… we will wait for Imane to receive her (translation device). I will try to take it slowly. Yes, there you go. You grew up in a small village. In the west of Algeria, not far from Tiaret. You had a difficult childhood because your parents were of modest means at that time, how did you see the future? As you were a little girl, how did you see yourself tomorrow? What exactly did you say to yourself? I'm going to become a housewife, I'm going to follow in my mother's footsteps, or did you dream big for yourself at that time?” Imane: “Since I was a little girl, like all Algerian girls, I had ambitions to achieve my dreams. I grew up in a small village in a central state in Algeria. In that small village I used to play sports, and I was talented in football in that village. The teachers at school saw me, they suggested that I participate in sports and specialize in athletics. Then I was invited to the Civil Defense Boxing Club. I went to the hall and saw the atmosphere inside the hall and how the training was. Since that day I fell in love with this sport and it became my favorite. I loved boxing a lot. Then I enrolled in the sport and from the first day I aspired to become an Algerian champion. At that time, within a month or two, I participated in the national boxing championship here in Algeria and won the title of Algerian Champion. After that I wanted to make other achievements. Then I joined the national team, and participated in the African Championship and the African Games, then the Mediterranean Games until the World Championship and I won a silver medal. Of course, the dream was always the Olympics and I won an Olympic medal eventually. Thank God.” Konnie: “So, it's true that earlier you were telling us a bit about your career when you got into boxing, but I heard that you owe 10 dinars to someone.” Imane: “Yes (laughing).” Konnie: “Have you paid him back?” Imane: “Oh no, not yet (laughing).” Konnie: “He was your coach at the time, who trusted you right away, who said to himself, ‘hey, here are 10 dinars’.” Imane: “Yes, yes, the money was to get a personal photo (for her profile).” Konnie: “You left and didn't come back.” Imane: “Yeah, that's right.” Konnie: “Well, he's waiting for his money, he's waiting for his 10 dinars. So it's true. We said that boxing wasn't your first choice. As a sport, your father loved to see you play football, so you played football in your village with the little boys. At what point, I know you've been recognized by professionals, but at what point did you even in your heart say, well, boxing is what's going to set me free?” Imane: “Yes, that's right, the first sport was football. Even my father encouraged me to play football, it was a sport that he loved to see me playing. But after I entered the boxing field, I felt that it is the sport that suits me, which I can succeed in. And as you know, there is a famous saying ‘boxing is the sport of the poor’. I saw that boxing would open many doors for me, I could make many accomplishments in it, and I can achieve my dream. As I told you before the dream was the Olympic Games from the beginning. I worked on this challenge, raised the bar, and told myself that I can achieve the title of Olympic Champion in 2024. Of course, with determination, challenge, and work, the result will be met. Praise be to God, the result was for several years in the Olympics. The gold medal was the result of years and years of work. Therefore, I think that it is the outcome of hard working for four years. Thank God, I won an Olympic gold medal in boxing for the first time in Africa.” #ImaneKhelif #Imanies #إيمان_خليف
