As someone from Texas, this content was completely new & foreign to me! I couldn’t understand how a landlord could control your thermostat, this could be truly dangerous for tenants.

People seem to be missing that there are no thermostats. If you want to know the temp inside, you’d have to get an actual thermometer. That’s how landlords can more easily get away with this.

Growing up our apartment was sweltering because they’d blast it to get it warm on every floor. It was brutal. You’d have to open windows sometimes.

What degrees is your apartment? If it’s not at the required temp, take a picture of the thermostat so you will have evidence.

If your steam pipes are hot but the radiators aren’t heating you may need to have them bled. Call your super if you have one to come check.

I have a little weather station (like $30) with an outdoor sensor. get one, set it up, document the exact indoor and outdoor temps during the day and at night. you'll have a strong case.

You have to pay for hot water? Both my pre-war building and my parents' (the only ones I've lived in) has hot water included. But gotta pay for everything else - electric, gas, Wi-Fi..

Get a thermometer, start tracking the temps and report to 311. Mine did the same I didn’t get heat last year till Feb. multiple 56- 60 degree nights

Continue to call 311 every time there is no heat. Every hour if you need. Encourage neighbors to call also. Your roommate should call also
