Larger the ship, lower the amount of water required.
More of the space in lock occupied by ship means less water.
Small yachts use the most water.

a lot of ppl are not aware that the canal requires fresh water, it cannot use salt water from the oceans due to engineering reasons & ecological concerns. Fresh lake & rainwater is a big deal here.
