you are wrong about water requirements. Larger the ship, lower the amount of water required. More of the space in lock occupied by ship means less water. Small yachts use the most water.

a lot of ppl are not aware that the canal requires fresh water, it cannot use salt water from the oceans due to engineering reasons & ecological concerns. Fresh lake & rainwater is a big deal here.
