Wednesday 16 August 1972 U.N Building New York U.S.A Wanume Kibedi was a prominent Ugandan diplomat and politician, born in 1943 in Bugwere, Eastern Uganda. He came from a respected family in the region, closely connected to Uganda’s political landscape. Kibedi rose to prominence after Idi Amin’s 1971 coup, becoming Uganda’s Foreign Minister. He was a skilled diplomat and one of the key figures in the early years of Amin’s regime, tasked with managing Uganda’s international relations during a turbulent time. In August 1972, shortly after Amin announced the expulsion of over 50,000 Asians of Indian descent, Kibedi was sent to the United Nations to defend Uganda’s position. At the time, the move was highly controversial, with many of those expelled holding British citizenship. Amin’s decision to expel them within 90 days had stirred international outrage, particularly in the UK. Kibedi, as Foreign Minister, took on the difficult task of explaining and justifying the expulsion to the international community. In his speech to the United Nations, Kibedi framed the deportation as part of Uganda’s broader agenda of economic liberation. Despite significant pressure from the British government and other international actors, Kibedi’s defense of Amin’s policy remained firm, aligning with Amin’s portrayal of the move as a step toward "Africanizing" Uganda’s economy. Nonetheless, Kibedi’s role in justifying such policies would later contribute to his growing disillusionment with the regime, eventually leading to his resignation and exile in 1973. #idiAmin #ughistory #uganda #Asian #expulsion #ugandanstiktok
