Horse drawn work today. I’m prepping my pastures for cover crop seeding. Any manure piles not blown apart by the ducks and guinea fowl during pasture rotation is dragged and spread, drag teeth up. This prevents tearing of soil. Today I chose Odin to work with me so he could get some exercise. This drag weighs several hundred pounds but is a cakewalk for him. He is a veteran driver and, with this extreme wind, I needed a pro to help me. To think he was discarded due to age and a blind eye at a killpen. 😭 I don’t use a bit and prefer leading and vocal cues rather than long reins. Back to cover cropping. This is the sacrifice plot where the ducks have resided all winter. They’ve been moved, and it’s time to grow forage for the animals while building healthy soil at the same time. In spring I plant a dryland pasture mix from True Leaf Market. The drag helps to even out the organic matter in the field to increase seed contact when over-seeding. I should add that if you are planning to grow forageable cover crops, be sure to check those crops are suitable for your animal species. Piper Sudan Grass, for example, is high in Prussic acid and can be toxic to horses. You can select crops to meet the crude protein and nutritional requirements of your stock PLUS enhance soil tilth, fertility, attract pollinators and more. I recommend the cover crop chart published by Rodale Institute (link below). You can copy and paste from a desktop. https://rodaleinstitute.org/science/articles/choosing-the-best-cover-crops-for-your-organic-no-till-vegetable-system/
