I read Brave New World and not 1984 in High School and this was by design because my teacher believed that if the US were to ever become a dystopia it would most closely mirror the vision of Huxley

I'm disabled and German so the thing I most encounter is Kafkaesque ^^ but completely agree all of them are present.

I remember some writer saying something like "the reason we so easily refer to 1984 and rarely to a brave new world is bc we live more in the latter"

I disagree with the idea that this is Huxleyan. Even if all choice was an illusion, the prime directive of the government was overall happiness for all the people. While the reason for that happiness was to keep people in line, people were still happy and when a decision was made, happiness was always the main consideration. The difference between that and today is that corporations are far less thorough and far more arrogant. They’ve overcharged for the bread and attach the subscription fee to the circus. The paradox of brave New World is that we, an outsider like John, view it as a dystopia while the members within its own society, believe they exist in a utopia. Only one specific and increasingly American class believe this to be a utopia.

Well yeah most of these authors based their dystopias on real life ones. They just took them to extreme conclusions. That's the secret, we've always been a dystopia.
