I don’t even know why this is considered lying by omission. You were never asked about when you completed the paper. Your teacher does not care when you completed the paper so why tell them about it?

This was my thought. Why even offer that information. If it’s due at 11am and you did correctly at 10:57 am it doesn’t even matter

Sometimes ppl want to give the ppl they care about context about their situation especially if it was worrying to them or gave them anxiety. They trust you to be open. & maybe thinks it matters to you

It's the same concept when you take off time for work. Most don't care why you're taking a few days of PTO. I have a co-worker who constantly overshares and it's annoying. 😆

If the cook delivers my food as says, "I barely even paid attention" but the food is good, was it a boon to my dining experience?

if a student tells me they wrote a paper 10 minutes before it was due i’m going to be way more meticulous about grading the next one, because now they’ve shown me that they don’t care

I do agree with the commenter that it shouldn’t materially change the way you grade the paper as I assume you’d be guided by a mark scheme and that you don’t just grade out of your head. However, if

Yep. Always best to lie to Professors and Bosses. The less they know about you the better. They are not your friends, just people you have to deal with in the present

It's how Autistic people get punished for existing. To us context is everything. The more information, the more our world makes sense. Society punishes us for not following social constructs.

...this is definitely an autistic / allistic thing. Autists aren't conveying that for excuses or accolades, it might be for, idk...building comraderie and sympathy, rather than social engineering. 😮‍💨 Allistic communication is overwhelmingly about navigating social hierarchies, I.e. don't tell the prof that you did it last minute or else you won't 'look good' to them, for whatever bs reason 🙄 There are so many reasons to convey information beyond manipulating other's perception of you. You're right that people should be mindful of volunteering information, but this response is narrow.

Lying by omission feeds the spectacle of academia that is largely unnoticed and to some degree, them telling you might he symptomatic of an attempt at connection. Why tell you at all? To tell you.

It’s a symptom of so many things. Overexplaining could be from hanging w people who find fault w everything. Could be trying to get ahead of ur criticism of paper is substandard and they offer that it

Jfc why is this an issue? Why is your perception more important on balance? If you don’t want to get to know them or they’re intolerable to you, which it seems they are, then set a boundary. 🙄

This is not true. Autism has been linked to abnormal development in the Default Mode Network and by extension may show a higher resistance to cognitive biases in general.
