The article was misleading. Seems like the industry is really trying to say the success of Arcane wasn't worth it for Riot. Series literally put the IP into the world, and made it a media franchise.

it's a MOBA... it's not going to have broad appeal for normal people. If riot wants to capitalize on projects like arcane they need to sell a more narrative forward product in the gaming space

Tell the rest of the story. Marc Merrill said “riot sells skins so they can make projects like arcane” and not the other way around. It didn’t need to be profitable.
