This tiny baby, a little bantam chick, passed away a short while ago. This baby is only a few days old, and was brought to us with 14 other chicks. They had been shipped from a commercial hatchery. Millions of chicks like this sweet soul are ordered from commercial hatcheries and are shipped through the US mail when they are less than 24 hours old. They have no heat, no food, no water. If they arrive at the post office after they close, the chicks wait until the next time they are open for pickup. Chicks who arrive Saturday evenings wait until Monday. Many die of exhaustion, hypothermia, internal injuries, and broken legs from shipping. These are babies who belong with their mama hen. They would know her voice before they even hatch, hearing her gentle clucks while still in the shell. Instead they are hatched in giant incubators, the vast majority of the males being killed outright or added to orders as “freebies,” to be someone else’s unexpected problems, making their futures grim and uncertain. The ones who are purchased are forced to undergo treacherous shipping. These commercial hatcheries often have sales, selling live animals as if they are no more than an inanimate object you’d buy online. This baby died because of them. Millions of others will as well. Currently, we are doing our best to critically care for the other 14 who were surrendered to us earlier today; some are still very weak and we are doing our best to give them the love and care they deserve. This is the reality of commercial hatcheries. Babies like this die. We are angry, heartbroken, and exhausted. This is not ok.
