On numerous occasions, former president Donald Trump has claimed that children are undergoing gender-affirming surgeries during their school day. However, Trump’s claim that schools are performing these surgeries are false. There is no evidence that U.S schools have sent children into gender-affirming surgeries without their parents knowing, or performed gender-affirming surgeries on site, nor is there evidence that a U.S school has sent a minor elsewhere to undergo such a procedure. Even in states where gender-affirming care is legal for people under age 18, parental consent is required before a minor can undergo such a procedure. NBC News contacted Trump’s campaign for evidence of this claim, and a spokesperson couldn’t provide any and instead pointed them to supposed reports about parents being left in the dark about their children’s gender transitions at school. Kate King, the president of the National Association of School Nurses, told NBC News that “There is no way that anyone is doing surgery in a classroom in schools,” going on to point out that even if school nurses want to give a child over-the-counter medication they need permission from parents and a physician. These claims from Trump come off the back of his plan to ‘protect children from left-wing gender insanity” particularly in schools. “My Department of Education will inform states and school districts that if any teacher or school official suggests to a child that they could be trapped in the wrong body, they will be faced with severe consequences including potential Civil Rights violations for sex discrimination, and the elimination of federal funding.” Trump has gone as far as to promise to penalize schools that teach children about transgender or gender-related topics. “We will cut federal funding for any school or program pushing Critical Race Theory, gender ideology onto our children.” However, it was called into question why such a policy would need to be implemented, particularly when 68% of teachers in the U.S who’ve been teaching for more than a year say the topics of sexual orientation and gender identity rarely or never came up in their classroom.
