So much so, that many wholesalers will not accept olive oil as „organic“ if it contains more than ~0.005mg of pesticides per kilo, according to Nikos. In comparison: non-organic olive oil may contain up to ~0.030-0.060mg/kilo of pesticides, as Nikos explained. Disclaimer: this is for Crete, amounts may very depending on your locations. Whether you want this in your food or not is for you to decide. But please note that pesticides affect not only the end product but also the lifecycle of a plant as well as the ecosystems around it. However, as I stated in previous videos, pesticides are used to ensure food security. A topic I will discuss more soon! Also a brief note on credentials. I have a PhD in anthropology with a focus on (amongst other things) sustainability. Nikos has been an organic olive farmer for 10 years. Before that he did conventional farming.
