When we're stressed, the body activates the fight-or-flight response, releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This leads to muscle tension, including in the jaw and surrounding areas. Jaw clenching or teeth grinding (often during sleep) happens unconsciously because our body is still processing stress, even when we’re resting. The best way to tackle jaw tension is to reduce overall stress with tools like meditation, breathwork, lifestyle changes, and somatic exercises. But for immediate relief, try this two-step process: 1. Massage the Jaw and Temporal Muscles: Start with the masseter muscle, located just below your ears along your jawline. Use your fingertips to make slow, circular motions, moving from just below the ear down toward the chin. This helps release tension in one of the main chewing muscles. Then, move to the temporalis muscle, which extends above your ears on the sides of your head. Massage in small circles, following the muscle from the temples upward and slightly behind the ears. This area is tightly connected to jaw function and benefits from relaxation. 2. Perform the Jaw and Tongue Stretch: Open your mouth as wide as you comfortably can to stretch the masseter and surrounding muscles. Then stick your tongue out as far as possible, aiming to point it toward your chin. This engages the genioglossus muscle (one of the main tongue muscles) and helps release deep tension in the jaw and mouth. Hold the stretch for 5–10 seconds and repeat a 3-5 times. #muscletension #stress #StressRelief #anxiety #tightjaw #jawclenching #anxietyrelief
