𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓 || 𝐔𝐒𝐅 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫'𝐬 '𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐇𝐁 𝟗𝟒𝟏𝟒, 𝟗𝟖𝟔𝟏' 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 CATARMAN, Northern Samar — The University Security Force (USF), led by Kim D. Marquita, took down The Pillar's banner bearing the call "Junk HB 9414, 9861" from the third floor of the Academic Circular Building today, September 17 during the Balik Kampus 2026. A standoff ensued at the stairs, where University Student Council (USC) President Jamismark Perante, Vice President for External Affairs (VPEA) Klitz Anaviso, and members of The Pillar questioned why the banner was removed. Marquita replied, "Ask your Adviser." Shortly after, Marquita received a call from the Dean of Office of Student Affairs (OSA) Arnold Rapsing asking him to release the banner as students rushed to witness the incident. During the confrontation, a member of the security personnel nearly pushed a member of the publication, who almost fell down the stairs. The banner, which read "Junk House Bill No. 9414 and 9861," and "Defend Press Freedom," was displayed as part of the afternoon session of Balik Kampus UEPic 2026: Lush Life. Students responded by rallying in support of press freedom and artistic liberty. "This is the right of the students, hindi ito tama, this is oppression," said USC President Perante during the tug-of-war over the banner. Students from different organizations, including the University Student Council and the College Student Council, demanded an explanation for why the banner was taken down from the academic building. The Pillar, the artist behind the banner, expressed concern over art liberty and press freedom. "Hindi kami naniniwala na diri kam maaram kun nano a rason kay ginpapatanggal iton," a Student Council member said during the confrontation. The incident comes as House Bills No. 9414 and 9861 remain under active deliberation at the House of the Representatives, with various youth and press groups expressing opposition. While no official reason was given for the takedown, the timing has prompted questions among students about the sensitivity surrounding the measures. ¶
