TRUNCAL INCURVATION OR GALANT REFLEX. Is a newborn primitive reflex, named after neurologist Johann Susmann Galant. It is elicited by holding the newborn in ventral suspension (face down) and stroking along the one side of the spine. This reflex occurs when the side of the infant's spine is stroked or tapped while the infant lies on the stomach. The normal reaction is for the newborn to laterally flex toward the stimulated side. The infant will twitch their hips toward the touch in a dancing movement. Its purpose is to encourage movement and develop range of motion in the hip in preparation for walking and crawling. Some authorities also believe that it prompts urination, and that this is why babies often urinate when the diaper is secured around their hips. The Spinal Galant Reflex is important in the development of hearing and auditory processing, as well as helping to achieve balance when the child is creeping and crawling. If the Spinal Galant Reflex is retained past 9 months of age, it can have an effect on the child’s ability to control their bladder, which may lead to bedwetting issues at a later age.
Symptoms of a poorly integrated Spinal Galant Reflex may include the inability to sit still and/or fidgeting due to waistbands or tags in clothing or the back of a chair activating the reflex. The reflex has a great impact on attention and concentration which also affects the short term memory because there is the incessant need to be in constant motion. Primitive reflexes are present at birth and happen automatically in response to stimuli in the baby. These reflexes are necessary for proper growth and development. Because primitive responses should disappear when they are no longer developmentally appropriate, many parents don’t even know when their babies transition as their development progresses. While many parents are familiar with the startle response (Moro) and the rooting reflex, there are many other primitive reflexes that are vital for development and learning as they grow older. The Spinal Galant is one of these. #babyreflexes #motherhoodisfunny
