It's often assumed that people who sleep rough on the streets or in their cars are there because they have no other option. While that is often the case, sometimes it is in fact a conscious choice - especially for pet owners. That was the case recently for Chris* and his dog, Bon*. Handsome boy Bon came into POTH's foster care program when Chris was offered a bed in a crisis accommodation service that does not allow pets. But although Bon was in a loving temporary home with one of our foster carers, and Chris had a roof over his head, it was far from the respite he was hoping for. Drug use and violence were rampant in the crisis centre and Chris couldn't sleep because of the constant noise and disruption. He feared for his own safety and missed his four-legged best mate terribly, so after 15 days he decided to leave. Chris and Bon were reunited and are living in Chris's car for the time being. It's not an ideal situation - far from it. But it's what's best for Chris and Bon right now, because being separated was doing more harm than good. Chris continues to work with social workers who are helping him get back on his feet, and we are of course standing by to assist with anything Bon may need. Stories like these are just further proof that people experiencing homelessness are often among the most devoted pet owners, putting their animal companions' welfare ahead of their own. And this is why we will never stop working to keep best friends together. * Names have been changed. #dog #germanshepherd #peopleandpetsbettertogether #reunion #petsarefamily #petsofthehomeless #poth #charity #homelesslivesmatter #homelessness #PetsOfTikTok #donate #dogs
