Loving your body is one of the hardest things we will ever learn how to do. There is an impossible standard of beauty that’s been set for not only women, but everybody. I even used to fit into those standards, and now that I am disabled there is a big difference in the way I am treated. I remember during our initiation at university we always played an icebreaker with the other residences where we would go into the middle of a circle and pick out the person we were most attracted to to introduce themselves next. I never got to introduce myself. I understand beauty is subjective and don’t expect to be picked out of pity, but only having lost my legs 6 months prior it affected me more than I wanted it to. But the moral of the video is not to feel sad for myself or have others pity me. I’m okay with not fitting everyone’s standards. My message is that we shouldn’t be placing so much emphasis on appearance when it’s so easy to suddenly stop fitting those standards. Your standard should be the healthy and happy version of you, and you don’t owe it to anyone to fit into their preferences. So next time you find yourself criticising how you look, how much you weigh, that little gap between your teeth - understand that you are so much more than your appearance.
