Especially when playing games that are very graphically demanding, you should always keep your laptop plugged in to get the best performance and preserve your battery. Doing other work or maybe very light gaming should be fine on battery. Some laptops also have a Multiplexer switch which can allow you to further boost performance in some games by telling your hardware to only use the dedicated GPU for graphics and not the integrated GPU.
