But by midday, the breach could no longer be contained. The Ottomans poured into the city like a flood. Constantine, refusing to flee, rallied his remaining men. “The city falls, but my soul shall stand!” he cried before charging into the melee. He was never seen again. By sunset, Constantinople was lost. Sultan Mehmed II entered the city and claimed it for the Ottoman Empire, marking the end of the Byzantine age.
