Explanation: In 1796 George Washington announced a refusal to run for third term as a president, establishing an unspoken anti-third term principle for US presidents. In 1908 Theodore Roosevelt decided not to break anti-third term principle and retire from presidency. Especially cause he previously pledged to respect and not break a two-terms tradition. But he didn’t really keep his word and in 1912 decided to run for the 3rd term considering Taft an unsuitable candidate from Republican party. But losing a presidential primaries Roosevelt went further to create his own Progressive party (often called as “Bull Moose party”). Roosevelt won a lot of votes as for a third-party candidate and even got more than Taft, but lost to Woodrow Wilson from Democratic party. Therefore some critiqued such a decision, Taft said: “Such extremists are not progressives—they are political emotionalists or neurotics”. Other critiques went further to draw a caricature we see on video.
