Many people think that saving money means cutting out everything they enjoy, but that often leads to frustration and overspending later. It's similar to how strict diets can lead to binge eating—you might see short-term progress, but it's not sustainable or enjoyable in the long run. Instead of cutting out joy, the key is learning how to spend in a way that aligns with your values and goals. Different people have different priorities, and that’s okay. My husband loves coffee, and it brings him true happiness. For him, investing in a good coffee makes sense. For me, I don’t drink coffee, so spending money on it would feel wasteful. However, I place a lot of value on health and beauty, so I spend more in those areas while cutting back elsewhere. Neither of us is 'right' or 'wrong'—we're just spending based on what matters to us. This is exactly how I teach our students to manage their money. It’s not about cutting out all the joys in your life because, when you do, it often leads to overspending later, much like crash dieting leads to binge eating. Imagine only eating broccoli for three months—you might lose weight, but is that really the healthiest, most sustainable approach? Of course not. The same goes for your money. The healthiest way to manage your finances is to spend intuitively, putting your money where it brings you the most happiness and fulfillment for each dollar spent. We want to teach you how to spend in alignment with your values, rather than telling you not to spend at all. When you understand what truly brings you joy and how that fits into your bigger financial picture, you'll be able to manage your money in a way that supports your goals without feeling deprived or guilty.
