@the_london_spy: I offer guided tours of the British Museum, this is one of my greatest hits from 2024, I'm on holiday and so I am putting up some of my favourites, apologies if you've already seen this before. The Rosetta Stone is probably the most famous object in the entire collection of the British Museum. It led to the cracking almost 1800 years later of the lost language of ancient Egypt. Imagine a civilisation that you had no information about, and suddenly being able to read what they've written, this was an astonishing achievement. Although the man credited with the discovery was the Frenchman Champollion, he recognised that a British investigator had significantly contributed to this. I also love the fact that in the case next to it, is an ancient Egyptian shopping list. The British Museum is an amazing London attraction and is one of my favourite things to do in London. #da#davidharryh#thelondonspyo#rosettastonee#heiroglyphicsn#ancientegyptg#egypth#champollionr#britishmuseum

It was found by Lt Bouchard, not really a trooper. Napoleon took 150 scholars with him. Thomas Young never understood the global sense of hieroglyphics sign. It's Champollion who read the Coptic

I ❤️The British Museum! As soon as I got in, I made a beeline for the Rosetta Stone and got a pic with it without the crowds.

When I visited the museum as a young boy in about 1972, there was no glass case on the real Stone so I lent over and touched it
