I think he became a villain out of necessity. He didn’t know how else to ensure his friends wouldn’t be treated badly after his death and took whatever measures to make sure they were the heros

he's a tragic villain tbh. I think people confuse protagonist and hero. I don't think he's inherently evil, his actions (the rumbling) he took in season 4 because of what he saw are tho.

I mean even Eren himself said he was the villain. Him becoming the villain was part of his plan so that he can make his friends the heroes.

sometimes I feel like some people can't differentiate between understanding someone's actions and the actions being justified - I think we can all feel for Eren's tragedy and see why he ultimately 1/2

Good villains have sympathetic origins and their own remorse about their crimes. AOT is unique in that we get introduced to the villain before witnessing their carnage

it's interesting how many can only contextualize the protagonist as either a hero or an anti hero. you can have a sympathetic villain w/out the actions being justified.

I think what makes AOT specifically the characters interesting is that they’re ALL victims of propaganda to one degree or another so I just find it interesting is that theirs always a staunch defence of x character more so their actions with out the proper nuance 🤷🏿♂️

I think this ignores the fact that the alternative was a gside against Paradis. There were no “moral” options. But at least with Eren there were people from both that still lived.

I wouldn’t agree with him being a villain at all, villain implies evil and Eren is not evil, sure what he did was messed up but he didn’t do it because he was evil

You can't separate art from meta. The fact that villains and heroes exist as they do is meta yes, but that doesn't mean it's cancelled out bc there's a bubble/trope making it so.
