Astronomers are always on the lookout for rocks tumbling through space that might come dangerously close to Earth. Only hours before the expected event, NASA tweeted that a tiny asteroid would disintegrate as a harmless fireball at 1:32 a.m. (CEST) January 21. The US space agency announced that an space rock would likely land in eastern Germany on Sunday night, close to the capital Berlin. By galactic standards, it was tiny: only an estimated one meter in diameter. According to the Minor Planet Center (MPC) in Cambridge, USA, the space rock was discovered a few hours earlier by Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky, and given the provisional name "Sar2736". It is now listed as "2024 BX1". The sighting was extremely unusual. According to the European Space Agency, 99% of near-Earth asteroids smaller than 30 meters in diameter have not yet been discovered. ☄️🌠 By the way: what's the difference between an asteroid and a meteor? An asteroid is a small rocky object that orbits the sun. A meteor is formed when a small piece of an asteroid or comet, called a meteoroid, burns up as it enters the Earth's atmosphere. If it actually strikes the surface, the meteoroid becomes a meteorite. #asteroid #asteriodes #asteriods #meteorite #meteoroid #Berlin #Sar2736 #2024bx1 #dwscience #dwhealth #sciencetok #science #LearnOnTikTok
