The loud sounds given off from the buzzing of its wings are the last thing its victims hear before being swept up and envenomated! This particular species of robber fly is known as a Red-Footed Cannibalfly (Promachus rufipes). Often mistaken for “giant mosquitoes,” these fearsome flies are fast flying predators that feed on a variety of different insects, and in some cases, even hummingbirds! Their hunting strategy usually consists of perching on something high up, such as tall plants and tree branches. The eyes of a robber fly are well acute to picking up even the smallest movement of prey. Once prey has been detected, robber flies fly off from their perching spot and quickly snatch their prey up while flying! They then use their specialized mouthpart called a hypotharynx to inject neurotoxic venom and proteolytic enzymes into their prey. These neurotoxins quickly paralyze the prey, while the proteolytic enzymes help liquify the internal tissues of its prey’s body.
