@sayitoncedogtraining: Your dog should listen without the use of hand signals. This is not to say that hand signals are bad, but typically if your dog is doing something wrong, they’re not looking at you. You need to have verbal control over your dog. Your goal should be to get rid of The hand signal as fast as possible. Dogs, like most men, cannot do two things at once, so if you are moving your hand while simultaneously saying the command, they didn’t hear anything because they were too busy, focusing on the movement of the hand. Say your command first without movement, and then introduce the hand signal. Every session make the hand signal have less movement. You will get to a point where you say your command, and it may take your dog, a second or two to think, this is a very important step. Do not repeat the command and allow your dog to process what is happening. If it takes a little bit of time, that’s OK, Your dog is not being disobedient at this stage, instead they just don’t know for 100%. as soon as your dog understands the commands, immediately move them to different rooms and surfaces. The amount of dogs that cannot lay down on what grass is astounding. We need to practice on concrete, grass, gravel, etc.. Remember. Say command ➡️ hand signal ➡️ Yes/Click ➡️ grab treat and reward!

Oh no, we love hand signals when working with therapy dogs in a hospital setting. Sometimes quiet cues are best.

While I understand your point, I did keep the hand signs for all ques. Cause one day their hearing or eyes will go. And then they still understand.

Well our dog now reacts not only to the command but also to just the handsignal. Which is nice, because when I am talking to someone and I want him to sit, I just handsignal and he sits.

what happens if a dog goes deaf and can't hear verbal signals? wouldn't training both benefit long term or why not?

I use hand signals for communicating at range. I can get my dogs to lay down or sit from 50 yards away with hand signals. Beats yelling.

Since dogs are more visual then verbal. Why not use hand signals? I'm curious of your thought process
